Canada Seeks to Stop BTC Donations for Truckers
Canada – much like the United States and several other nations around the world – has worked hard to instill unconstitutional vaccine mandates allegedly meant to fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Several have objected to these mandates, claiming that they go against the civil liberties that many individuals receive just by being born. You cannot force people to make medical decisions they may not feel are right for themselves, and in areas like the U.S., it’s refreshing to know that the court systems are willing to stand up and say “no.”
However, in other areas like Canada, the fight wages on. The rule in America’s neighbor to the north is that truckers – who spend most of their time alone in the cabin of a truck unexposed to other people – must be vaccinated if they’re going to keep their jobs.
Naturally, many transporters are not willing to accept these rules, and have formed what’s known as the Freedom Convoy as a means of protesting what they say is pure unethical regulation spreading throughout the nation. They have blocked bridges, gathered along the Canada-U.S. border in protest, and are refusing to accept the rules.
People around the world have taken notice. Some countries – such as Australia – have formed their own trucker-based convoys, while others have donated money to the cause. Not long ago, after GoFundMe decided to end donations for truckers following claims they went against the company’s terms of service, a crypto fund was set up to ensure truckers received what they needed to continue their protests.
Trudeau isn’t too happy about this and has invoked the Emergency Act of Canada for the first time in more than 30 years. The Act allegedly permits the use of anti-money laundering tactics, which could ultimately be manipulated to allow crypto wallet seizures. Chrystia Freeland – the Canadian Deputy Prime Minister – explained in an interview:
We are broadening the scope of Canada’s anti-money-laundering and terrorist-financing rules so that they cover crowdfunding platforms and the payment service providers they use. These changes cover all forms of transactions, including digital assets such as cryptocurrencies.
How You Can Still Help
Several industry experts are taking issue with this and are advising donors on what to do. Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong, for example, is telling users to set up self-custodial crypto wallets so they can retain the keys to their wallets and prevent their money from being subjected to financial oversight.
The protests seem to be working thus far. In regions like Ontario, individuals no longer need to show proof of vaccination before entering a public arena.
