Last year, Huawei was at the center of the U.S.-China trade war. The fall out of this situation between both countries wasn’t pretty. Sources say that Huawei has been making facemask donations to several countries. This has been seen by many hawkish individuals in the west as a move to influence nations to accept their 5G equipment.
COVID-19 Masks Donations Made by Huawei to Canada Won’t Affect 5G Decisions
Canada is still yet to receive all of the 6 million masks that Huawei is giving to the North American Country. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already said that the donations won’t affect its decisions on 5G. He stated:
“We are not expecting these donations to have any impact on our decisions. In fact, they will not affect our decisions on any issues.”
In a strange twist of fate, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer Weng Wanzhou is being tried for extradition to the United States.
The United States has cited certain national security issues concerning Huawei’s 5G equipment. The guys in Washington are concerned about the Chinese being able to use Huawei’s telecoms equipment to spy on American soil.
The Americans have taken the game way out of the ballpark this time. They have banned trading between Huawei and all American corporate entities. They have also tried to convince their allies to do the same or similar but with mixed results.
The No. 1 U.S. ally, the United Kingdom, has already gone ahead with plans to include Huawei’s 5G equipment in its Telecoms upgrade. Other nations are moving on with 5G upgrades without Huawei. Australia has flat out banned Huawei and ZTE on this issue.
China Is Accused of Undue Influence
The details of Huawei’s donation to France remains murky. Sources say that U.S. Rep. (R) Tn. publicly alleged that President Macron had asked President Xi Jinping for 1 billion masks. He further alleged that the Chinese President indicated affirmatively that the masks will be delivered.
There was allegedly one caveat. Huawei’s 5G hardware should be used in France as they roll out. This allegation was vehemently denied by the French Ambassador in the United States.

The Chinese also responded to these allegations via spokesperson Zhao Lijian:
“Certain individuals in the U.S. resort to lies and disinformation to sabotage international cooperation against the pandemic.”
Many pundits believe that at least some of the aid granted by nations will come with traded favors and promises. Such moments of crisis may also be unprecedented opportunities. That is according to this school of thought.
Others believe that this may be the Chinese government’s way of seeking inclusion in a multi-polar world. This could be the case post-COVID-19 as many nations are suffering from the chaos that the coronavirus has brought.
For the victims of COVID-19 though, such a situation can be summed up in an anonymous African saying: “When two elephants are fighting, it is the grass that suffers”.
