Angela Merkel in Quarantine

On Friday, the German Chancellor had a precautionary vaccination against bacterial pneumonia. Later, it turned out that the doctor who administered the vaccine was positive for coronavirus. After this news, Angela Merkel decided to quarantine herself. However, Merkel’s quarantine does not mean she will stop her business, as the leader will continue working from home. According to German government spokesman Steffen Seibert, she will also have regular COVID-19 tests in the coming days.

Shortly before the doctor’s positive test, Angela Merkel spoke at a news conference after consultations with regional leaders. There, Merkel announced new restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Those include a ban on holding public meetings of more than two people.

Angela Merkel said:

“The great aim is to gain time in the fight against the virus. I’ve canceled almost all appointments where people would have come into the chancellery or where I would have gone to people. So my life has also changed fundamentally and consists mainly of telephone and video conferences.”

Merkel also reminded of the importance to remain at least 1.5 meters apart to reduce the risk of infection. Further, she thanked Germans who obeyed the rules.

“I know that it means to sacrifice. I’m moved by the fact that so many are abiding by these rules. This way we show care for older and sick people because the virus is most dangerous to them. In short: we are saving lives with this.”

Germany May Borrow 356 Billion Euros to Fight Coronavirus Effects

Coronavirus outbreak has not only undermined separate industries but also wrecked economies in general. The German economy has suffered as well. In this regard, the country’s government is considering borrowing 356 billion euros ($370 billion) as stimulus measures to rescue the economy.

156 billion euros ($166.83 billion) of the sum will be a supplementary government budget. Another 200 billion euros will be an additional debt authorization. This money will be spent on an economic stability fund that can take direct equity stakes in companies and given in credit to public-sector development bank KfW for loans to businesses.

Deputy Finance Minister Joerg Kukies stated:

“The extent of the federal government’s actual borrowing under the rescue fund is currently not foreseeable, since this depends on the extent to which companies will make use of rescue funds. It could also be significantly lower.”

As well as other countries, Germany is waiting for the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, there are at least 20 coronavirus vaccines in the pipeline globally. The leaders of this race are Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ: GILD) and Moderna Inc (NASDAQ: MRNA). The company that will succeed in developing the vaccine will be the world’s new hero.
