Messi has signed a two-year contract to join the French team Paris Saint-German. There is also a clause that could potentially see his contract expanded by an additional 12 months. It is estimated that he will garner as much as $25-$35 million by being one of the team’s new kickers.
But the real clincher behind this story is that half of that money will be doled out in the form of what are known as “PSG tokens.” Holders of these tokens are granted say in future decisions and maneuvers regarding the team. Thus, Messi will likely have a prominent role in how the future of the PSG organization plays out.
This is not the first time a sports player has been open to bitcoin or crypto payments to engage with others on the field. Several football players, for example, have either signed endorsement deals that garner them crypto funds on the side, while others have flat out traded some of the fiat currency that they earned through their salaries into BTC.
Arguably, the biggest example of this is Russell Okung, a former player for the Carolina Panthers. Okung allegedly earned as much as $13 million each year while tackling his opponents on the field, though approximately $6.5 million – about half the original figure – was transferred to bitcoin.
In a press release, Okung mentioned that owning bitcoin was not just about garnering riches; it was about obtaining financial power and stability. He stated:

The PSG team is not the only organization to delve out tokens that grant users votes in future choices. The UFC – a mixed martial arts fighting company – also utilizes such a system alongside international soccer teams like Italy’s AC Milan and England’s Manchester United.
