A Tuesday announcement by Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) has revealed that the electric car maker company will be switching from radar-type to autopilot features for its Model 3 and Y vehicles in North America, joining the bandwagon of automakers, such as GM Cruise, Alphabet’s Waymo, and Aurora, whose vehicles use both radar and camera features.
One of Elon Musk‘s tweets on May 26 revealed information regarding its release date with FSD beta V9.9 which is set to be released with subscription in a few weeks.
According to his tweet, “pure vision Autopilot is now rolling out in North America. There will be an update of this product release in 2 weeks, then FSD beta V9.0 (also pure vision) a week later. FSD subscription will be enabled around the same time.”
Tesla has been working on no-radar autopilot, and Full-self drive (FSD) features that is now rolling out in North America for a while, as the plan of switching to Tesla vision on Tesla Model 3 and Model Y had earlier been made known on its official web pages, with details of the features, such as its maximum speed.
The company has however noted that it is not set to transition all its vehicles to no-radar and FSD, as similar products outside North America will be radar-type till it deems it necessary to switch entirely to Tesla Vision.
Musk, while explaining the rationale behind this development in March, described radar-type as an alternative for shortfalls of vision, which is not too good. He also noted that pure vision Autopilot is the way to “real-world AI.”
During the Q1 2021 earnings call, he had said that “when your vision works, it works better than the best human because it’s like having eight cameras, it’s like having eyes in the back of your head, beside[s] your head and has three eyes of different focal distances looking forward. This is – and processing it at a speed that is superhuman. There’s no question in my mind that with a pure vision solution, we can make a car that is dramatically safer than the average person.”

Per this, Tesla has corrected the misconception of its manual vehicles to disregard the belief that the cars can be corrected while sleeping, saying it needs to be monitored.
Among other rationales is that Radar sensors are expensive compared to the camera-based system, which stands to enable auto-pilot in the following areas, such as traffic-adjusted cruising control or automatic lane-keeping.
