Cryptocurrencies On the Simpsons

The Simpsons is one of the longest-running television shows in the world. Starting in December 1989, it has since captured the hearts of millions of fans globally. Naturally, to be on the big screen for over 30 years, it means that the show keeps high ratings.

Therefore, running a whole segment regarding cryptocurrency could be accepted as a significant mainstream exposure.

In its animated way, the show used Jim Parsons to explain how digital assets operate. Parsons, the actor who played the iconic Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, said:

“For cryptocurrency to work, we need a record of every transaction that occurs. These are recorded in what’s called a distributed ledger.

When you use the currency, the transaction is recorded in the ledger. And when one ledger book gets filled up, we add to a chain of previous books. That’s the blockchain.”

The segment continued by outlining one of the significant benefits of cryptocurrencies – digitalization. As they don’t exist in physical form like fiat money, for example, the video said: “not in your wallet; I’m in your computer.”

Additionally, while showcasing a written down explanation of digital assets, it said that “we know who Satoshi is, but we’re not telling.” Naturally, it refers to Satoshi Nakamoto – the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin.

Cash Of The Future?

The Simpsons has built a reputation for accurately predicting the future, believe it or not. A recent article from earlier this month shows 18 such examples. Those include the creation of autocorrect, smartwatches, the Ebola outbreak, and most famously, Donald Trump’s election as the President of the U.S.

With that being said, it’s worth noting that the video referred to cryptocurrencies as the “cash of the future.” It would be interesting to follow if this statement would turn out to be true.

In any case, being mentioned on a TV show as popular as the Simpson seems quite positive for cryptocurrencies. At least the community believes so. Many members have been continuously talking about it on social media.
