Jack Dorsey Gives Rise to the BTC Emoji

Dorsey has always offered praise to bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. In 2018, he stated that bitcoin was likely to become the world’s single currency in approximately ten years. In addition, he is about to embark on a three to six-month tour of Africa, in which he will work to bring bitcoin and the power of crypto to the continent’s many peoples. He has also said that bitcoin payments are likely to be as common as cash payments in the coming future.

Now, he’s looking to make bitcoin as frequent and as common a term as “happy” or “birthday.” From here on out, whenever people type in the word “bitcoin” while composing a tweet, they will have the option of placing the emoji into their message. The symbol is composed of an orange-gold “B” that also has the qualities of a dollar sign that’s slanted slightly to the right.

Several people have sought to implement the emoji and “test it out.” Among them is Binance chief executive Changpeng Zhao, who simply wrote in a tweet “Let’s do this” followed by the new emblem. TRON CEO Justin Sun was also quick to write up a quick message that utilized the new emoji.

Dorsey’s latest work comes following an October 2019 request from Anthony Pompliano, a co-founder and partner at Morgan Creek Digital. In mid-October of last year, the professional trader, crypto analyst and entrepreneur wrote on social media:

Twitter needs a bitcoin emoji. Retweet if you think @Jack and his team should make it happen!

It seems like Dorsey took the bait and has sought to make Pompliano’s dreams and the dreams of his followers come true.

The emoji also comes at a time when bitcoin isn’t trending particularly hard on Twitter. While there has been a spike in bitcoin mentions on the social media platform since February 2, this can likely be attributed to individuals looking to see the new emoji, and cryptocurrency still doesn’t account for a large portion of Twitter activity. Perhaps this new symbol is what’s needed to ensure that the world’s number one digital currency by market cap always has a presence amongst social media users.

Further Changes Ahead

In the meantime, Dorsey’s Square venture has announced it will soon be hiring various bitcoin developers as a means of establishing a stronger crypto ecosystem within the company. Dorsey tweeted the news, along with a follow up message expressing his joy over Square’s potential changes:

I love this technology and community. I’ve found it to be deeply principled, purpose-driven, edgy and… weird. Just like the early internet! I’m excited to get to learn more directly.
