TBCASoft, IBM and SoftBank Corp. have announced their collaboration in an effort to transform the industry of telecommunications. The companies will work on developing cross-carrier blockchain solutions, offering new services to telecom carriers and their clients, and promoting advanced business models.
TBCASoft is a US-based startup company that focuses on developing technologies especially for the sector of telecommunications. Founded in 2016, the company received funding from SoftBank, and later, they partnered to form the Carrier Blockchain Study Group (CBSG) that was joined by Sprint and Taiwan’s FarEasTone. CBSG os working on the development of blockchain solutions for phone manufacturers. By now, the consortium has signed up 18 operator groups, among them are MTN Group, du, Turkcell, PLDT, Axiata, Telekomunikasi Indonesia International, and Etisalat.
Within the partnership, the partners will do their best to let carriers exploit blockchain technology through the Carrier Blockchain Study Group. TBCASoft will provide technology and solutions, IBM will bring its blockchain technology and share great experience in integrating and scaling blockchain networks, and SoftBank will share its expertise in telecommunications. According to the provisions of the agreement, the companies will also work on providing an opportunity for mobile-phone clients to pay locally using their devices when traveling abroad.
TBCASoft CEO Ling Wu expects the initiative to broaden the community’s horizons and bring new values. He commented:
“As the global pioneer of cross-carrier blockchain solutions, we have been working closely with leading telecommunication carriers in the past 3 years under the CBSG consortium to drive adoption of CCPS platform. As the technology provider of CCPS, we are extremely excited to see the strong momentum of the platform and how it is positioned as an important pillar of the telecommunication transformation strategy.”
As for SoftBank, yesterday we mentioned it in the context of the WeWork deal. But it is far not the only reason to speak about it. In 2020, SoftBank that has been the first company to adopt a cross-carrier payment system is planning to launch the system in Tokyo.
“We are proud to contribute to this project, which utilizes our expertise as the first adopter of the CCPS platform. We look forward to working on this ecosystem transformation initiated by the telecommunications industry, with carriers around the world united as one through blockchain technology,” said Daichi Nozaki, Vice President & Head of SoftBank Corp. Global Business Division.
Utpal Mangla, Vice President & Partner for Blockchain at IBM Telecommunications Services, stated:
“As telecommunication networks evolve and we move into the 5G era, carriers will help transform into digital service providers and provide consistent customer experiences across multiple platforms. Leveraging a telecommunications blockchain network that can enable improved cross-carrier relations, cross-carrier payment can help transform the way telecom carriers transact with partners and customers to deliver innovative payment solutions.”
It is notable that IBM is not joining the consortium. For IBM, the initiative is just “a business relationship”.
