Donald Trump declared a national emergency over the coronavirus pandemic.The declaration frees up as much as $50 billion in financial resources to assist Americans affected by the outbreak.

United States President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on Friday because of the fast pacing spread of the coronavirus. He stated this move will make up to $50 billion available for the fight against the virus.

Trump stressed today’s action also includes urging hospitals to make “emergency preparedness plans” active and to provide the Department of Health and Human Services with the power to give up laws so they can profoundly offer medical professionals flexibility in dealing with the virus.

According to Trump, the country already made “tremendous” progress and will ultimately defeat COVID-19 as a result of his administration’s decisive actions. Trump also said this emergency declaration was much needed because some “old and obsolete” rules could not work under such “mass circumstances.”

Pelosi Introduces Bill to Allow Free COVID-19 Testing amid National Emergency

Earlier today, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi introduced the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which would allow all U.S. citizens to get tested for the COVID-19 free of charge, even the people who are uninsured.

Pelosi stated:

“We can only defeat this outbreak if we have an accurate determination of its scale and scope so that we can pursue a science-based response that is necessary.”

In addition to the free testing, amid the national emergency, the legislation would provide two weeks of paid medical leave for those infected by the virus and strengthen unemployment insurance for the people who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

New York State Reaches 426 Infected Cases

Meanwhile, the number of people that have been confirmed as infected with the coronavirus in New York City, regardless of the outcome of their condition, has was at 154 on Friday, up by 59 on a daily basis.

In the New York state, 421 have contracted the virus, up by 96 since yesterday, and 3,260 tests have been performed.

The state’s governor stressed that he believes that “thousands and thousands” of people have contracted the virus at some point, a vast majority of which were not aware of it and recovered. The closing of schools will be decided on a local level, he added.

‘Very Strong’ U.S. Policy Lowers the Coronavirus Death Toll

Trump previously said that there would be many more coronavirus deaths in the country if his border policy was not “very strong.”

A few days ago, he banned all travel to and from China and the European Union in an effort to curb the spreading of COVID-19. On Thursday, Trump expressed hope that the coronavirus situation will improve soon and that the travel restrictions will be lifted quickly.

EU Establishing €37 Billion Investment Initiative

On the European side, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said European Union needs to be “determined, coordinated and united.” Commenting some states closing borders due to coronavirus spread, she stated that certain controls may be justified but general travel bans are not seen as the most effective by the World Health Organization. She stressed the EU will establish a €37 billion investment initiative as part of a package of measures to soften the bloc’s economies from the impact of coronavirus.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced on Friday a €1 billion package as an “initial response” to be used as emergency funding for companies in developing regions hit by the coronavirus.
