Chatterjee – the Newest Member of the Coinbase Family
In a blog post, Chatterjee expressed his excitement over his new role and working with the crypto exchange, writing:
I am excited about what crypto and blockchain technology can do to democratize our financial systems. I believe cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology can help open up the financial system for everyone by growing commerce and cross-border commerce, by lowering transaction costs and by providing higher security.
There is an irony here considering Chatterjee’s past connection with Google, a company that by many standards, has sought to shutter and slice up the crypto space for some time. Recently, the company took aim at a crypto-centered application known as Bitcoin Blast. The company removed the app from its Play Store citing its “deceptive practices,” though the app was later quickly reinstated with no explanation.
The same thing also occurred with an Ethereum-based application known as Meta Mask.
Prior, Google-owned video streaming site YouTube took aim at several crypto channels that posted content relating to digital currencies and blockchain technology. What was strange is that most of the channels appeared to be small, while larger corporations such as CNBC that posted crypto-related material remained untouched.
YouTube and Google later issued apologies, saying that the channels had been targeted due to a glitch, and that all removed content would be restored, though at the time of writing, it’s not clear if YouTube or Google have followed through on their promises yet.
While at Google, Chatterjee – over an 11-year period – helped people “find and compare products.” In addition, he also was involved in the company’s mobile ad department, which is one of the most prominent and successful divisions of the search engine giant.
CEO of Coinbase Brian Armstrong offered praise to Chatterjee in a blog post, explaining:
It’s clear that Surojit’s insights and experiences on the front lines of global commerce make him the perfect person to lead our product organization, help us continue our pace of repeating innovation, and bring Coinbase products to the next billion crypto users around the world.
Getting Things Started
Chatterjee is slated to begin his new job over the following week. Among his primary projects will be helping Coinbase to “organize its cryptocurrency exchange wallet.” He’s also looking to develop new educational resources centered around stable currencies for Coinbase customers. Chatterjee is a potential replacement for Jeremy Henrickson, who served as the chief product officer for Coinbase up until 2018.
Coinbase is one of the largest and most popular cryptocurrency exchanges in the rural United States. Stationed in San Francisco, CA, the company services hundreds of thousands of clients and processes billions of dollars in digital transactions each day.
