This has been viewed as giving runner an unfair advantage. World Athletics plans reportedly to introduce new rules on the usage of the shoes. A technical body is investigating this. Findings will be released next month. These rules, however, aren’t in place yet. Ban on sales seems unlikely.
Experts seem concerned that Nike could takeover Asics’ market share. These concerns aren’t unconfounded. Nike is a global brand and could be the dominant player in the market.
Others think that the move by World Athletics could be great advertising for the Vaporfly. Negative publicity will put Nike super shoes on the spot. More sales from that kind of publicity can be expected for Nike. Asics may also lose its market share from such publicity.
Nike Super Shoes Break World Records
In October last year, Kenyan runner Brigid Kosgei set a new marathon record. She beat the previous record of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds. Brigid was wearing Vaporfly sneakers.
Another Kenyan performed the same feat in Vienna in the same month. Eliud Kipchoge won the popular Ineos 1:59 challenge in the same timeframe. He also had the Vaporfly on at the time. World Athletics will reportedly allow such records to stand.
World Athletics is also considering introducing new rules on the use of carbon-fiber in the soles of running shoes. Running spikes are under the hammer as they may be banned.
Nike’s first Vaporfly model was introduced in 2017. Kipchoge wore them. He won all six world major marathon events. The shoe has made quite a name for itself. Various athletes have won major events across the globe.
This has, of course, has attracted the attention of World Athletics. They want to keep the spirit of fair play to be the reason for winning sports. Enhancements of any kind will damage the reputation of athletic sports worldwide. While talent is necessary, shoes might just get some athletes a world record (pun intended). Fair play remains the best way to win at anything in life.
