Why Péter Szilágyi Thinks Ethereum is Losing the Plot?

Summary:
Team Lead Péter Szilágyi has raised concerns about the future direction of the Ethereum blockchain network. His concerns center around the Ethereum PeerDAS proposal, which includes increasing the size of Ethereum blobs to 32 MB. Szilágyi argues that this upgrade would make it difficult for home stakers, who typically use simpler computing setups, to participate in the network. This, he believes, goes against the decentralized ethos of Ethereum. At this point I’d be happy to proven otherwise, but I feel #Ethereum is losing the plot. The research team fully embraced the idea to centralise everything as long as it can be verified. Which is a cute charade: decentralised validation but centralised control. — Péter Szilágyi (karalabe.eth) (@peter_szilagyi) July 26, 2024 In a message posted on

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Szilágyi complained about several problems with the PeerDAS proposal, including that it would effectively bar home stakers from the network. He stressed that the PeerDAS upgrade would mean block distribution within subnets in no more than four seconds. Here, Szilágyi anticipates that with the proposed 32 MB blobs, the situation would be unbearable for home stakers and hence they will be locked out.

He also continued to attack the Ethereum research team, stating they are okay with centralization so long as it can be validated, which he deems opposite to validation. Szilágyi called this a “cute charade” because while validation is still distributed, control is centralized.

Szilágyi Criticizes Ethereum Researchers for MEV Relay Operations

Ethereum blobs, which are pieces of data that can be stored on the network for a short time, were implemented in March of this year after the Dencun update via EIP-4844. Szilágyi mentioned that he was afraid that the PeerDAS proposal would actually hamper these efforts and further centralize the network.

Additionally, Szilágyi raised the issue of self-contradiction when he said that some Ethereum researchers operate MEV relays that benefit directly from centralization. He asked if the Ethereum research team is even aware of these issues in the world of cryptocurrency, or if they are wilfully pushing their selfish interests.

In his conclusion, Szilágyi said he thinks Ethereum is being taken over in real-time, and maybe the research team is playing its own game. Unfortunately, he stated that Ethereum appears to be losing the plot, indirectly implying that the network may be placing more emphasis on generating revenues than on core values. Ethereum was valued at $2,513.07 at the time of writing, the market price of which has recently changed.
