Base hit 4 million active wallets last week, marking a new all-time high on this front. The enhanced engagement stems from its ‘Onchain Summer’ program that incentivizes builders and users alike.

The Ethereum layer-2 has 600 ETH, upwards of $2 million, as rewards for developers, attracting the best minds in the space to create novel onchain applications. The event began in June and will remain active through August.

Base’s lead developer, Jesse Pollak, mentioned the increased usage of the network in an X post. “last week @base had an ATH of 4m active addresses.” He further shared data from Dune Analytics that highlighted the fact, also saying “minted this moment on @DuneAnalytics on @base.”

The ‘Onchain Summer’ event is not new. Base ran the campaign last year as well for a month to increase the network’s adoption as it was just making its way into the Ethereum ecosystem. And it was a success. It averaged about 130,000 unique wallets daily, attracted over $240 million worth of assets bridged to the layer-2, and observed over 700,000 NFTs minted by 268,000 wallets.

With it doing great last year, the layer-2 network’s team brought it back this year and has aroused tremendous interest in the blockchain. Beyond independent developers and Web3 names, Base had gaming studio Atari’s Web3 vertical indulge in the action to launch its hit arcade game Asteroids onchain. It requires users to mint NFT access passes to play the game and climb its leaderboard.

While it garnered massive interest from the gaming community, some in the Web3 space realized the game may not be onchain as Atari claimed. Stackr Labs’ CEO and founder, Kautuk Kundan, managed to hack into the leaderboard and rise up the rankings without playing a single game, which he and his team claim would not be possible if the game was deployed onchain.
