After long waiting, Sony Interactive Entertainment has finally officially confirmed that its upcoming next-generation console will indeed be called PlayStation 5 and will be ‘launching in time for Holiday 2020’.

We have already reported of Microsoft and Sony that decided to merge in order to fight competition from Amazon and Google in the provision of cloud gaming services that are expected to take the gaming world by storm in the near future.

Playstation never had imaginative names. Since the original PlayStation came out back in 1994, Sony’s series of videogame consoles has stuck to the numbers (Samsung, Apple… any clues? ). Without any prefixes, the name was by only numbers so we witnessed: PlayStations 2, 3, and 4.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, however, decided to keep this ‘tradition’. He said:

“The console will be called PlayStation 5. It’s nice to be able to say it. Like a giant burden has been lifted from my shoulders.”

And now we are having it – PlayStation 5, just in time for Thanksgiving in 2020.

Sony hasn’t revealed any technical issues regarding the new project. However, what some media did reveal was that Sony bounded games show E3 this year, a “glitch” during which Microsoft revealed details about its own next-gen console (successor to the Xbox One referred to only as Project Scarlett).

So, here is what we’ve got. Similar to the PS5, Scarlett will “boast a CPU based on AMD’s Ryzen line and a GPU based on its Navi family; like the PS5.

SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan revealed the console would feature a new controller, presumably dubbed DualShock 5, that is “designed to up the immersion by incorporating a novel take on the sense of touch as part of the gaming experience. It’s heavier than the existing DualShock 4 and uses a USB Type-C connector.”

The biggest change is integrating “haptic feedback” that is actually better than the traditional rumble technology and it offers a broad range of sensory responses to in-game actions.

Website Wired published a piece that is thoroughly explaining what the users can exactly expect from the PlayStation 5. Together with already known factors like the use of AMD-designed Ryzen/Navi mashup APU, Ryan confirmed that the PS5 will have new-tech SSD.

Ryan explained:

“The second innovation is something we call adaptive triggers, which have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.

In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.”
