Google LLC (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) owned YouTube has launched a TikTok rival dubbed YouTube Shorts, a short video creation service for creators and artists. The Google-owned firm noted that it created the YouTube Shorts service in a bid to create more value to sway with the recent advances of mobile devices.

The firm claims it is one of the pioneers of short video creations, a feature it wants to continue leveraging to empower artists and creators by taking advantage of YouTube’s large audience.

“We’re excited to announce that we are building YouTube Shorts, a new short-form video experience right on YouTube for creators and artists who want to shoot short, catchy videos using nothing but their mobile phones,” YouTube’s VP of Product Management Chris Jaffe said in an expository blog post.

The service is billed to commence in India where the users can test out the platform and give initial feedback on the YouTube Shorts.

“Over the next few days in India, we’re launching an early beta of Shorts with a handful of new creation tools to test this out. This is an early version of the product, but we’re releasing it now to bring you — our global community of users, creators and artists — on our journey with us as we build and improve Shorts. We’ll continue to add more features and expand to more countries in the coming months as we learn from you and listen to your feedback,” Jaffe added.

Brief Look at YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts is a way to create 15-seconds or shorter videos using a multi-segment camera to string multiple video clips together. To create unique videos on YouTube Shorts, users will have access to a large library of music to record and enhance their content. The integration of speed control as well as a countdown timer also adds glam to the video creation process.

Another major added incentive to users as highlighted by Jaffe is the grand exposure leveraging YouTube’s over 2 billion visitors on a monthly basis. YouTube noted that it is also going to make watching Shorts videos a great experience for all of its viewers.

For those in India with access to the Shorts camera, you can start creating videos by hitting the plus (+) icon (or soon, the video camera icon on iOS), then selecting “video.” If you see “create a short video” as an option, then you have the Shorts camera. For Android users in India, however, you’ll see the “create” icon has been moved to the bottom of the navigation bar for easier access, YouTube says.

While the service is generally available for Android users, the iOS version will be unveiled in time.

“There’s much more to come, and over the next few weeks and months, we’ll continue to roll out more creation tools and easier ways to watch short videos on YouTube as we listen to your feedback,” Jaffe said in his concluding statement.

Taking Advantage of TikTok’s Ban Saga

YouTube is the latest among a string of entities to take advantage of the embattled state of TikTok to launch a video creation service. As noted by TechCrunch, the likes of Triller, Dubsmash, Byte, and others, have picked up some new customers following the ban saga.

With TikTok already unoperational in India, the choice of the Asian giant to debut the YouTube Shorts appears strategic.
