American retail giant Amazon has made a new acquisition: the company purchased Health Navigator, a company focused on developing APIs for online health services and providing evidence-based digital health information content. The sum of the deal is not yet clear.

According to Amazon, Health Navigator will join the membership of the Amazon Care group, a pilot healthcare service program for Amazon employees launched in September that delivers prescriptions with remotely communicated treatment plans. Health Navigator did not provide any comments on the deal, however, the company has stated that new contracts with existing clients will not be signed.

In an email to CNBC, Amazon spokesperson commented on the acquisition in the following way:

“The service eliminates travel and wait time, connecting employees and their family members to a physician or nurse practitioner through live chat or video, with the option for in-person follow up services from a registered nurse ranging from immunizations to instant strep throat detection.”

For the giant, the acquisition is the second in the sphere of health care. Last year, Amazon purchased online pharmacy company PillPack for $753 million. A significant amount of Amazon’s investments goes to PillPack, as the retailer is committed to strengthening its positions on the health market. Currently, PillPack has 50 job openings listed on the Amazon website.

Recently, Amazon ran an event where the giant announced 80 new products, 15 of which were completely new hardware products. They rolled out Echo Studio, which is a direct competitor to Apple’s Homepod, Echo Flex, which is a standalone speaker that can be linked with Alexa, Echo Glow, which is a glowing device that changes colors, and Echo Buds which is a direct competitor to Apple’s AirPods. As experts have estimated, this significant and massive announcement adds to the competitive advantage of Amazon and places it in one line with AppleMicrosoft, and Google that have also announced some keynotes this year.
