Amid this launch, Ola has already signed up 10,000 drivers in London. According to Simon Smith, Head of International at Ola, this amount was reached in three weeks, and a large number of drivers had occurred ‘through referrals and word of mouth.’
Such a fast growth in the number of Ola’s drivers is a result of Uber‘s failure in London: one of the most popular ridesharing companies has lost its operating license in London over unsafe and fraudulent trips. Uber changed specifics in its systems, which led to many unauthorized drivers uploading photos and information onto other driver’s accounts, with some even being able to fake their identities. It was estimated that between the end of 2018 and early 2019, there were 14,000 of these fraudulent trips perpetrated by 43 drivers. After this, London authorities will not renew Uber’s license, which means Uber will not be able to operate in the UK capital.
A day after the announcement about Uber came, Ola announced its plans to launch in London.
Simon Smith commented at that time:
“We have had constructive conversations with the authorities, drivers, and local communities in London over the past months, and look forward to contributing towards solving mobility issues in innovative and meaningful ways.”
He added:
“We are inviting the tens of thousands of private hire drivers across London to register themselves on the Ola platform, as we prepare to launch in the city in the coming weeks.”
It is expected that the full official launch will take place in mid-January 2020.
